“We’re Gonna Have to Deal Without a Soundcheck”

When Eddie and I went into our latest Coffeehouse Cinema event, we were coming off the high of screening The Singers. We’d been getting a lot more attention, and I had started taking Coffeehouse Cinema a little more seriously with my time.

That meant I was entering a transition period. I was leaving my work with the NAACP and stepping into a season where I would need to dedicate more of my bandwidth to Coffeehouse Cinema while also exploring a few other opportunities that I’ll reveal more about very soon.

With all that being said, even though Eddie has different jobs, I have different opportunities I’m exploring, and Royce has a business to run, Coffeehouse Cinema still shows up around the same time every month.

This particular month included Memorial Day weekend, which meant I wasn’t going to be in town. That also meant I had less time to dedicate to the event. Eddie had less time and caught the flu. Royce Rollins, the owner of the coffee shop, had less time. Because of that, our typical sound and video test, which usually happens the week of the event or at least a few days before, simply wasn’t able to happen.

Sometimes you run into situations that aren’t ideal, and yet you still have to make decisions anyway.

The challenge was that we had already dealt with sound issues at the previous event. This time, we didn’t have the same issue. We had a different issue altogether.
